Logistical items of interest follow.
Dress code
Semi-formal at the wedding.
What will the weather be like?
In mid-October, Mammoth gets highs of 60°F, and lows of 30°F. It can get
windy. Rain and mild snowfall can also happen.
Getting there
The best flights are through Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO). From
there, the best option is car rental, followed by a 3 hour drive 😐. The 395
North
provides a way to do this by public transit.
People from LA or SF will likely want to drive, and SFO can provide better
connections for many. Having a car in the mountains is a good idea, especially
if you want to go exploring. For example, the wedding site has wifi, but no
cell service.
Local recommendations
Eating: the best walkable area is near the Village Gondola
Station, where there are many
restaurants and breweries. If you are driving up through Bishop, we strongly
recommend a stop at Erick Schat’s Bakery.
Adventures:
There is hiking. There is climbing. Convict Lake Resort also rents paddleboards, kayaks, and boats. It’ll probably be too early for skiing. If you have a car, the 40 minute drive up to Tioga Lake has AMAZING views, assuming that Tioga Pass is open. You can go further and enter Yosemite this way as well.
Accommodations
There are a wide range of options to consider.
At one extreme, there are upscale hotels
located near downtown.
At the other, there is a large
campground at Convict
Lake suitable for both RV and tent camping.
Luke would probably rent an RV from Reno if he were flying in.
If you do prefer the upscale hotel idea, we got a room block at the Westin in Mammoth Lakes, which is about a 15 minute drive from our venue (along very accessible roads). Please use this link to make a reservation. Note that there is a $25/night resort fee on top of the nightly fee.
Otherwise, we recommend that you explore hotels, airbnbs, and other lodging options
according to your own preferences. The cabins at Convict Lake itself are
mostly already booked, but the McGee Creek Lodge is
a comparable nearby experience.
Astronomer Things:
The same weekend as our wedding, a nearby observatory, the Eastern Sierra Observatory, will hold a Dark Sky Festival. There are a ton of different events that look great! It’s a few hours' drive from Mammoth Lakes, but may be worth it for some of you coming to the area early.
Eclipse
We’ll see a little over 80% of the Sun being covered, weather permitting.
Ingress and egress are each about 1 hour, maximum coverage lasts around 5
minutes.
It will look like this:
Hilariously, we did not know that this would be happening when we planned this
wedding. We’ll see if we can bring some telescopes with appropriate
filters.
Health & Safety:
We’ll follow all relevant guidelines to make the event as safe as possible!
